Today, my daughter overheard a conference call with an investor. When I got off the phone she asked me, “what is an investor?” I explained it to her and went back to my calls. Later that night, before she went to sleep, she went to her savings bank and took out the money she had been saving for several months. She handed it to me and said, “Here, Mommy, take my money and make me your investor. I don’t need it, I think it’s a good idea to give it to Tikatok.”

I wanted to take her $47.25 and make Tikatok the best investment in the world for her. But, I didn’t take it. Instead, we compromised, and I got a kiss.

Maxine Clark (59) , founder, Chairman and CEO of Build a Bear Workshop (www.buildabear.com) was interviewed by leadernetwork.org.  The article struck me for two reaons.

First,  Maxine said that one of her most important lessons was to not be afraid to fail. Maxine credits her first grade teacher with instilling this lasting piece of advice that served her so well in her life.

Second, when asked about leadership one comment caught my attention: “My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Fischer really helped me because…she made me the leader of the class. She had me be her assistant, so I learned really early on what it’s like to assist and to be seen as a leader through serving others. It was a great moment for me. Mrs. Fischer is a person who I will always remember and thank for giving me that chance of leadership at such a young age”

This made me think about my daughter’s teacher and how much influence she has on my daughter’s life, I think I will send her the link to the article.

Blackberry and Foliage October 28, 2008

A car ran over my Blackberry.  For an entrepreneur who pretty much lives for email , this was obviously a traumatic experience. In fact, it took T-mobile 7 days to get me a new phone. The first day, I couldn’t function. But guess what, by the second day, I realized that there is life without a Blackberry after all. On the third day I felt free. I saw all of my emails eventually and anyone that needed me called my office line. Now I’m less connected to this “communications device” which is good for me and my family and ironically my business.  Side benefit, I realized that Fall arrived… just in time to notice all the beautiful leaves.

Last night, my 6 year old asked if she could have a private conversation with me.   I said, “Of course,” and she took me to her room, closed the door and said, “Mommy, I know that you are very busy working with Tikatok and I am very busy in school and all my activities after school, but I miss our mommy time.”  She continued,  “Do you mind, when you have some time and you don’t need to travel, could you spend time with me?”  I told her that every Friday , after work, I will spend time just with her. OK, so I do feel a little guilty that my daughter had to have this conversation with me, but on the bright side, I am so proud that she spoke up and made it clear what would make her happy!

OK, so it’s been a stressful week with little sleep and a lot of stress.  So last night I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on.

I went with my 6 year old to a book store, usually she picks a book and I read it for her. Last night she said, “Mommy, I will read the story to you.” Guess what?  She read the whole story! I couldn’t believe it. I thought, am I sleeping? Am I traveling too much? I asked her, “Who taught you to  read ?”  She answered, “I just learned by myself.”

Well, I felt a bit guilty that I didn’t know that my daughter could read, but the good part is that she figured it out!

20/20 vision and 20 pairs of glasses September 15, 2008

I’m on the computer all the time and as we all know, this can leave even the best eyes weak and in need of glasses.  As a result I’ve been wearing prescription glasses and sunglasses for many years.  Recently I went for a routine check- up and my doctor congratulated me.  It turns out, my vision has improved dramatically and I don’t need glasses at all.  Frankly I’m shocked and not entirely happy.  You see, I’ve spent years purchasing very cool glasses and incorporating them into my fashion ensembles.

So what should I do now?

1. Buy one new pair of non-prescription sunglasses?

2. start a whole new collection….

I bet you can guess which way I’m going to go.

Channel 5 (ABC’s Boston affiliate) filmed a story about Tikatok. They came to one of our library workshop in Charlestown, MA . Bianca De la Garza interviewed kids and parents about Tikatok. I think it will be a great story. They will air the story tonight on their evening news (5 to 6:30PM). If you have time, please watch it!

This weekend we went up to StoryLand in New Hampshire.  For those that haven’t experienced this right of passage for all parents with young children, click here for more information (www.storylandnh.com)  The park is clean, safe and perfect for my two young girls to enjoy.  I also like the nursery rhyme heritage of the park.  We even saw Mother Goose sitting by the entrance.  Does StoryLand perpetuate a love of reading?  Well, that might be going too far.  But heck – it can’t hurt and it sure is fun!

I have worked in various technology related fields for the vast majority of my adult working life.  It’s always involved complex-sounding words and was, quite frankly, a mystery to my oldest daughter.  She would often ask me questions about what I do and how I do it, but explaining complex technological terms in child-friendly language has always been a challenge.  Finally with Tikatok, I have created something my 6 year old can understand.  Strangely, It’s the most proud I have ever been.
